ASSOCIATION: Young Professional Association for Agricultural Research for Development (YPARD)
The Young Professional Association for Agricultural Research for Development (YPARD), a new association was launched in November 2006 at the GFAR meeting in New Delhi. YPARD was founded by Balasubramanian Ramani, an Indian researcher in Germany, after discussions at the AGM meeting in Morocco in 2005. It is currently hosted in the University of Hannover, and supported by the Swiss Development Center (SDC). Young Professionals are defined as any person under 39 years old working in the area of agriculture research for development. YPARD aims to:
- facilitate exchanges of information (through newsletter and e-discussion),
- broaden opportunities for YPs to contribute to strategic policy debates (e.g., try to be represented in high level policy organizations- and peer-review committees, and potentially formulating policy statements on critical issues)
- promote agriculture among young people (e.g., they are participating to the design of a curriculum on agriculture in schools of a country of West Africa)
- facilitate access to resources and capacity building opportunities (training etc) for YPs in the field of agricultural research for development.
This small organization is very ambitious and is trying to reach many people in many disciplines (any agriculture discipline) and working in many different types of organizations (from research institutes to farmer groups).
Learn more about YPARD on their website http://www.ypard.org, on how to become members (free/just need an email), to receive their newsletter, contribute to e-discussions, bring in ideas, and share information with the network on events/training/jobs announcements etc.
