JOB OPENING: Regional Director for East and Southeast Asia (ESEA)

The WorldFish Center is an international research center with a mission to reduce poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture. Supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) we undertake collaborative research with partners from more than 50 countries. We employ approximately 270 staff stationed in twelve countries, with headquarters in Malaysia.

The Center seeks a senior researcher and manager to manage and direct our operations in East and Southeast Asia (ESEA). This is an opportunity for a gifted individual to improve the lives of millions of people in Asia. As Regional Director you will serve as the Center’s primary representative in the ESEA region. You will take the lead in setting the strategic focus for the Center’s research in the region, and develop and maintain the Center’s relationship with its investors, partners and stakeholders. With a multidisciplinary team of about 30 researchers and an annual budget of over US$3 million, you will oversee project development and project management for the region. This position reports to the Deputy Director General.

Responsibilities

Lead the implementation and further development of the Center’s strategy for the ESEA region;
Maintain and further develop high-level relationships with investors, partners (both government and non-government) and stakeholders;
Create and purse new growth opportunities for WorldFish within the ESEA region;
Lead development of compelling research projects and identify the human and financial resources needed to deliver the identified research outcomes;
Lead, manage and provide intellectual input to inter-disciplinary teams to deliver project outcomes that meet stakeholder needs;
Supervise project leaders to ensure that projects are managed effectively to produce specified outcomes, within budget and timeframes.

Qualifications and Experience

Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in pursuing research for development, inspire staff commitment to scientific excellence and development impact, foster teamwork and resolve conflicts constructively;
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build diverse partnerships and forge consensus among diverse stakeholders over complex and contentious development issues;
Track record of effectiveness in working effectively with senior levels of government, inter-governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations;
Proven capability to secure and manage external funding for research and development projects;
PhD in relevant applied social or biological science (applied economics, sociology, geography, anthropology, political science, rural development, aquaculture, fisheries, natural resource management, zoology, ecology);
Strong track record of internationally published, peer-reviewed work.
