JOB VACANCY: Post-Doctoral Associate Position in Economics and Ecology of Ecosystem Services
Post-Doctoral Associate Position in the economics and ecology of ecosystem services School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University to support the recently-formed ecoSERVICES group directed by Charles Perrings and Ann Kinzig, and the DIVERSITAS ecoSERVICES core project office. Requirements:
- Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Economics, Ecology or a related field at the time of appointment.

TRAINING: Market Access for Sustainable Development (Wageningen University)
The course aims to support policy makers, development organizations and professionals in their new role as market facilitators.
It is an introduction to how markets can be used as tools to alleviate poverty in a sustainable manner. The topic will be approached via two related questions, namely:
- How can the poor effectively engage in market development?
- How can the poor access markets better with their products?
A limited number of fellowships are available for nationals of selected countries at NUFFIC. Candidates who wish to apply for such a fellowship should begin the application procedure as soon as possible by applying for admission to Wageningen International. CALL FOR CONCEPT NOTES: Value chains and the rural poor in disadvantaged regions (IDRC/ODI)
The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) has a Call for Concept Notes on action research on “Value chains and the rural poor in disadvantaged regions”. The research must be located in a disadvantaged region in one of the following four Rural Poor & Environment (RPE) priority regions: the Sahel Belt of West Africa; the Nile Basin; South Asia; the Mekong Delta; or the Philippines.
The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) has been working with the RPE initiative within IDRC to develop a research agenda that supports poor, rural households to engage more successfully with global economic processes. On behalf of IDRC, ODI is now managing the implementation of this research agenda. Concept Note Forms shall be presented to ODI either electronically or by post by 16:00hrs (U.K. time) on June 29, 2007.

TRAINING: CROP Training 2007: Poverty & Human Rights
The course offers an opportunity to NGO workers, policy makers, researchers, and graduate students from around the world to gain in-depth knowledge about the relationships between poverty and human rights.
The course is designed to provide a critical, interdisciplinary, and intercultural exploration of global poverty and inequality from a human rights perspective, and to analyze historically the content and direction of the aspects of human rights that the world has seen since the 2nd World War to the present day.
The course will be held over two weeks (6-17 August) in Bergen, Norway, and will provide participants 5 ETCS credits + 2.5 credits for approval of a submitted paper.

For more than 20 years, ILEIA (The Centre for Information on Low External Input and Sustainable Agriculture) has published a quarterly magazine, currently entitled LEISA Magazine, in pursuit of our mission "To contribute to the alleviation of poverty, to enhance ecological sustainability and to safeguard social and cultural integrity of smallholders in developing countries through the further development and promotion of low external input and sustainable agriculture." Subscription is free to individuals and organisations in the South, so maybe you know some people who might like to subscribe – this can be done via the website, by email or in writing to the address below. All past issues of the magazine are also available and fully downloadable at no cost, from our website www.leisa.info. On the website you can also find Calls for articles for upcoming issues, and Authors Guidelines. We have partner organisations in Brazil, Peru, India, Indonesia, China and West Africa all publishing regional editions of the magazine in their various languages, while we here publish a global edition in English. The total number of subscribers is approximately 42 000, and with an estimated 200 000 readers worldwide.
With our most recent issue ('How farmers organise') we also distributed a documentation manual developed by ILEIA - "Learning from Experience: A manual for organising, analysing and documenting field based information." Over the next four years, ILEIA will put more emphasis on the documentation and systematisation of experiences in sustainable agriculture. In our experience, knowledge on LEISA is often developed in the field, as a result of the work of millions of small-scale farmers and the organisations that support them. However, these efforts are very rarely written down and do not get publicised through conventional channels, therefore remaining largely unknown. This reduces the opportunities for learning from these experiences, as well as sharing the learnings and building a wider body of knowledge on LEISA related practices. Recognising this as a major bottleneck for the exchange and dissemination of LEISA information, ILEIA is starting a specific programme in 2007 for increasing the documentation of LEISA experiences. We are looking for partners who would be interested in using the manual, but we are also keen to look at other ways of documenting experiences, highlighting the options available and analysing these different possibilities and their results, creating a forum to share different experiences and draw lessons from them. Some of these have been presented on the web pages http://documentation.leisa.info/index.html and we invite you to share your ideas and initiatives with us. CALL FOR EOI: CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food
The CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) to lead ‘Basin Focal Projects’ (BFPs) in one or more of the following river basins: Nile; Limpopo; Indus-Ganges; Niger, Yellow and the Andean system of basins. Institutions can apply to lead projects in more than one basin, but must submit separate EOIs for each, identifying the team members within each EOI. It is anticipated that projects will be of two years duration, commencing in August 2007 and finishing in September 2009.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Open Society Institute's Women's Program
The Open Society Institute's Women's Program seeks to increase successful advocacy campaigns, policy initiatives, strategic litigation, or action research that address different forms of discrimination against women. The program is particularly interested in supporting innovative initiatives that link women's rights strategies with other rights strategies, raising awareness about women's multiple discrimination. The program invites proposals from groups operating at the local, national, regional, continental, or international level. Organizations can apply for a 1-year grant ranging from $25,000-$100,000. Proposals should be submitted no later than May 15.

The EAAE PhD Workshop (September 4-5, 2007 • Rennes, France) is an event at which 50-60 PhD students will be able to present their research and receive comments from their colleagues as well as experienced professionals.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Education for Sustainable Development (AIT)
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) have agreed to carry put a programme on "Education for Sustainable Development" for the period of 2006-2009.
Similarly, the Netherlands Ministry for Development Cooperation and AIT have partnered to offer a program called "Human Resources Development (HRD) for Asian Partners Countries" covering the period from October 2006-December 2009. A large number of master's and a few (13) doctoral degree scholarships are available for the nationals of Asian countries under these cooperation programmes.
