JOB OPPORTUNITY: Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Water Policy and Governance
The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) in Duebendorf (www.eawag.ch/index_EN) and ETH Zurich invite applications for a faculty position in Water Policy and Governance. We expect the new professor to focus on policies and regulatory systems related to integrated water resources management. Research emphasis may lie on issues such as risk assessment and regulation of chemicals, or river development concepts. He or she will head a research group at Eawag, a leading multidisciplinary water research institution. Teaching duties include courses at the Department of Environmental Sciences and the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences of ETH Zurich. The Foundation's mission on the Environment is to advance the knowledge and methods of water resource management which are sustainable and positively impact both the quantity and quality of water supply. Grant requests are accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis and are evaluated by the PepsiCo Foundation's Executive Committee, made up of three Foundation officers. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: The Wallace Global Fund (WGF)
The Wallace Global Fund’s (WGF) mission is to promote an informed and engaged citizenry, to fight injustice, and to protect the diversity of nature and the natural systems upon which all life depends. Objectives include the
- Effective protection of the environment and natural resources and their capacity to provide for human needs and
- Progressive public policies that serve the common good, protect civil liberties, and guard against corporate abuses.
The Fund seeks to further its mission generally through fundamental public policy and systemic change. It supports activities at the global and national level, and will consider significant local or regional initiatives offering the potential to leverage broader national or global impact. It will consider proposals for either core support or project-specific support. Grant proposals are processed and reviewed on a continual basis. The average grant size is $50,000, with actual grant awards ranging from $2,000 to $400,000. The Fund makes both one-year and multi-year grants. The review process typically takes between one and three months. In addition to grantmaking, WGF staff often provide potential network contacts, advice, and other assistance to applicants.

The Swiss Society for Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology will hold its annual conference in 2008 on April 3 and 4 in Rapperswil. The Board of the Society has formed a Review Committee to select some contributions for this conference. Under the topic “The Economics of Agriculture as Source and Victim of Environmental and Climate Change,” the Review Committee cordially invites contributions dealing with environment-related subjects, with the impact of agricultural production on greenhouse gas emissions and with the effect of global warming on farm economics, to name a few relevant fields within Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology. Contributions from other fields of agricultural economics and sociology are also welcome. A Networked Research Approach is a new hands on Guide to conducting research in a network setting that has been developed by IFRTD. Through over 8 years of facilitating international networked research programmes the Forum has pioneered and tested this approach to fully reflect its Southern-driven networking principles. At the heart of the Networked Research Approach is the perception that the international development agenda remains dominated by the economic interests and institutional priorities of the North, and supported by knowledge that is generated through Northern Universities, resource centres and think tanks. One means of addressing this imbalance is to ensure that the research used to determine and justify development priorities is both Southern-driven and accessible to Southern-based policymakers and development practitioners.

STEPS (Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability) is a new ESRC-funded research centre linking environment and technology with poverty reduction and social justice. It is hosted jointly by the Institue for Development Studies (IDS).
Research Officer - Maize (Ref 209): To work on a project tracing the political contexts of innovation pathways for maize and their implications for livelihoods and human health in Kenya. Applicants will have strong research experience in Africa, familiarity with agricultural policy debates, and be willing to conduct local-level fieldwork. A working knowledge of Swahili would be desirable.
Research Officer - Peri Urban (Ref 210): To work on understanding and promoting sustainability and social justice in the highly dynamic peri-urban areas in and around Delhi. CALL FOR PAPERS: Second Green Week Scientific Conference, Berlin 2008
The Institute for Agricultural Economics and Social Sciences of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, together with its partners within the Marie-Curie Programme and ATSAF will conduct the conference with the title: Enhancing the Capacities of Agricultural Systems and Producers in Berlin on the 16th and 17th of January, 2008
The conference will have a systems focus, looking at the rural sector as a whole and examining important factors of change. Natural as well as socio-economic issues will be discussed. Young scientists are expected to play an active role at the conference. Conferences are closely linked to the summer schools and training courses which will enable junior researchers to gain access to state-of-the-art knowledge and methods, employing a variety of proven and innovative work forms.

EVENT: Engaging with fragile states: Challenges and opportunities

CAPRi Working Paper 66: Collective Action for Livestock Mobility, Ecological Viability, and Livelihoods

This paper leverages datasets and results from two separate studies carried out across eight Kajiado group ranches and offers a unique opportunity to look at emergent pre- and post-subdivision trends from an interdisciplinary framework that combines ecological, political, and human-ecological research perspectives. It provides insights into the following issues: the loss of flexibility and mobility for Maasai herders’ dues to subdivision, the nature of collective activities that individuals pursue after subdivision, and the emergence of pasture sharing arrangements. NDVI profiles show that forage options for individual herders decrease dramatically under privatization, but rebound somewhat when parcels are shared between households located adjacent to each other. Interviews show that households redistribute portions of their herds for long periods and swap/share pastures. Parcel sharing translates into more grazing flexibility, particularly when it occurs between households in different locations. The Maasai also continue to develop and finance collective structures for the provision and maintenance of boreholes, earthen dams, schools and health clinics. Although new economic innovation characterizes some of these strategies, most are grounded within traditional social networking mores. There is need for policy makers to support these efforts as they evolve.

EVENT: Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity
The fifth Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity will be held 29 October - 2 November 2007, and will be hosted by the Norwegian government in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This year's conference is entitled 'Ecosystems and people - biodiversity for development'. The conference will provide input to the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and its preparations for the ninth Conference of the Parties (COP-9) in Germany in 2008. It will focus on the critical role of biodiversity and ecosystems in providing goods and services that are necessary for human well-being and security and for economic development.
