The IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Programme operates in twenty-one countries in the Horn of Africa, East Africa, southern Africa and the Western Indian Ocean. The Regional Coordinator for Drylands oversees all aspects of the IUCN drylands projects and programmatic activities in Eastern and Southern Africa. S/he will inherit a portfolio of project activities for which s/he will be responsible for supporting implementation, monitoring performance, and ensuring efficiency, effectiveness and quality outputs. S/he will further build the Drylands Component Programme through the development of additional project interventions and the mobilization of resources. S/he will contribute to various regional and, through the IUCN Ecosystem Management Programme, international networks related to the management of dryland resources. The regional Drylands Component Programme is implemented in collaboration with IUCN members, partners, global thematic programmes and Commissions.

The MDG Centre is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of a Gender Facilitator. The incumbent will be based in Kisumu at the community level and will work together with the Millennium Villages Project team and adolescent women’s and girl’s committees to design, evaluate, and implement village-specific priority interventions and a community action plan for implementation and management of those interventions in the Millennium Villages.

FELLOWSHIPS: Women’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (ICRAF)
The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is establishing a Women’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme, with guidance from the CGIAR Gender & Diversity Programme. The launch of this new Fellowship Programme coincides with International Women’s Day to demonstrate our commitment to recognise and advance gender balance and equity.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Tropentag 2008
Tropentag 2008 on Competition for Resources in a Changing World - New Drive for Rural Development will be held on October 7–9, 2008 at the Centre for Agriculture in the Tropics and Subtropics, University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart.
“Tropentag” is the annual International Conference on Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural and Natural Resource Management in Germany and is jointly organised by the universities of Bonn, Göttingen, Hohenheim, Kassel (Witzenhausen), Hamburg (2009), Zürich (2010) and the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research (ATSAF e.V.) - in cooperation with the GTZ Advisory Service on Agricultural Research for Development (BEAF).

TRAINING: Market Access for Sustainable Development (Wageningen)
A training course on Market access for sustainable development will be organized by Wageningen University from 3 Nov 2008 - 21 Nov 2008.
This international course is an introduction to how markets can be used as tools to alleviate poverty in a sustainable manner. It introduces participants to the conceptual frameworks related to market development which can be used to analyse the market context and identify pro-poor development opportunities within it. It provides practical tools and instruments to develop appropriate market-driven policies.

EMPLOYMENT: Coordinator for Africa (ILC)
The Africa node of the International Land Coalition (ILC) is looking for a regional coordinator. The secretariat of ILC is hosted by the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development in Rome. As a part of the process of decentralising some of the functions of the secretariat, Kenya Land Alliance (KLA), based in Nakuru, will be hosting a node for ILC Africa. A coordinator for the node will be based in the east African region, most probably in Nakuru, and provide support to the development of the ILC network in Africa.
An initial 12 month contract is offered at a salary commensurate with the regional nature of the post. The contract will be renewable subject to performance and availability of funding. ICRISAT is seeking a Deputy Director General for Research (DDG-R), to be located at its Headquarters in Patancheru, (near Hyderabad) India, reporting to the Director General.

AWARD: Equator Prize 2008
The Equator Initiative announces the opening of the call for nominations for the Equator Prize 2008: Celebrating Community Success in Biodiversity Conservation and Poverty Reduction.
This marks the fourth round of the internationally renowned Equator Prize. Awarded biennially, the Equator Prize recognizes community-based initiatives that demonstrate extraordinary achievement in reducing poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the equatorial belt. Prize winners receive worldwide recognition for their work as well as an opportunity to help shape national and global policy and practice in the field.
The Equator Prize 2008 nomination process will be open through May 31, 2008. Details on the criteria for the Prize, information on the award process, and the online nomination system can be accessed through the Equator Initiative website at www.equatorinitiative.org.
