CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Small Grants Thesis Writing at African Universitites

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is pleased to announce the twenty second competition under its Small Grants Programme for Thesis Writing. The grants are designed to contribute to the development of the social sciences in Africa, and the continuous renewal and strengthening of research capacities in African universities through the funding of primary research conducted by post-graduate students and professionals. In this connection, candidates whose applications are successful are encouraged to use the resources available under the grants to cover the cost of their fieldwork, the acquisition of books and documents, the processing of data which they have collected and the printing of their thesis/dissertation. As the Council has a strong interest in encouraging African researchers to engage one another on a sustained basis, recipients of the small grants will also be supported to order books and journals produced by African scholarly publishers, including CODESRIA itself. They will also be encouraged to apply to attend CODESRIA research methodology workshops. [more information]

TRAINING: Disaster Risk Reduction, Vulnerabilities and Capacities in the Context of Climate Change

The objective for the second edition of the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR 2010) is to propose a continuing education course to professionals and specialists from both Southern and Northern countries who already have significant experience in disaster risk reduction or a connected field such as climate change adaptation or development. The course will be held in Switzerland and India and thus offers a unique chance for sharing the different standpoints and experiences of Europe and Asia regarding the risk issue.

The course will be organised in 2 parts, each consisting of 2 weeks of full-time study:

The first part will take place at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, from 6-17 September 2010.
The second part will be held at the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) in Bangalore, from 8-19 November 2010.

The Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) programme of the IDRC (Canada) and DFID (UK) is organizing a conference on "Pastoralism and Climate-Change Adaptation in Africa", to be held 24-28 May 2010 in Egerton College, Kenya. You can help Applied & Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) support an economist from Africa by nominating them to receive a travel grant to attend the 2010 Joint Annual Meeting. The AAEA Foundation will provide funding to offset travel costs for those selected. The nominees should be professional economists from Africa who are currently working in the field of agricultural, development, environmental, food and consumer, natural resource, regional, rural, and associated areas of applied economics and business. FUNDING: South-South Annual Research Grants

The South-South annual research grants aim to promote collaboration among researchers from the South and to stimulate analytical empirical studies on topics of relevance for their countries. Special attention will be given to projects involving the elaboration of alternative methodologies, the generation of new empirical data and the critical questioning of dominant theoretical paradigms. Altogether 9 (nine) proposals will be selected with a maximum grant of USD 10,000 per project. The resources allocated would be freely utilized in activities related with the research: information collection, data processing, books purchase and related expenses. Resources cannot be used for project designing or for direct or indirect costs of the supporting institutions.

The Collaborative Tri-continental Program was launched in 2005 by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA) with the purpose of enhancing the production of knowledge suitable for fostering high quality social science research to build a Southern perspective on critical issues, with the aim of feeding these into global debates. The International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management was launched by Swiss Re in 2002. It expresses the company's commitment to planning, evaluating and realisation of water-related projects and aims to promote awareness and the efficient use of this precious resource.

The International ReSource Award is worth USD 150 000 in total and is granted to one or several projects selected by an international jury. The ReSource Award is an internationally recognised prize for leadership in implementing the principles of sustainability in watershed management. It is conferred annually. The prize money is awarded exclusively for project implementation activities and not for building up or strengthening the organisations that are submitting an application. [more information]

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Fellow in the Development Strategies and Governance (DSG) Division for a two year, fixed-term, renewable appointment. Bio-Innovate is a new multidisciplinary competitive funding mechanism for biosciences and product orientated innovation activities in Eastern Africa. It will focus on delivering new products through bioscience innovation systems involving a broad range of actors, including scientists, private sector, policy makers, NGOs and other practitioners. It will use modern biosciences to improve agriculture and conserve the environment through improving crop productivity and resilience to climate change in small-scale farming systems; improving the efficiency of the agro-processing industry to add value to local bio-resources. FUNDING: UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund Call for Applications

Youth-led organizations in developing countries working to improve the lives of young people and their communities can now seek financing for their projects through the UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund. The Fund will provide grants for innovative projects that promote employment, good governance, shelter and secure tenure.

Only applicants aged 15-32 from cities in developing countries can qualify for a grant. Support will be provided primarily for those working to improve slum conditions and to raise opportunities for young people growing up in poverty. Projects encouraging gender equality or involving partnerships with the government or the private sector are particularly welcome. Small development initiatives are eligible for grants of up to USD 5,000, and larger projects up to USD 25,000. [more information]

The Decision and Policy Analysis Program (DAPA) of the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is seeking English speaking recent graduates for 6-12 month internships. CIAT is an international research center, one of the fifteen global centers of the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research. Located in Cali, Colombia and working on international projects in Africa, Asia and Central and Latin America, the DAPA program evaluates the effects of climate change, evaluates technology and knowledge gaps, critically analyses environmental and agricultural policy in Latin America, and considers barriers to market access for small, rural producers in developing countries.

The interns will gain experience in international research for development, and will be actively encouraged to use the internship as a stepping stone to further education at the masters or PhD level. [more information]

EVENTS: Fourth RRI Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change

The Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) is pleased to announce the fourth Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change to be held in London on April 6, 2010. The Dialogue series is designed to foster critical reflection and learning on forest governance, the rights of forest communities and Indigenous Peoples, and forest tenure in the context of global action to combat climate change. REDD+ emerged as one of the rare points of consensus from the confusion in Copenhagen. The draft decision document made some progress on the recognition of the rights of Indigenous Peoples and environmental and social safeguards and six developed country governments also pledged 3.5 USD billion in quick-start finance for REDD+. While the UNFCCC process has yet to finalize the overall architecture and safeguard frameworks, interested governments are gathering outside of the UN process - in Paris (March 11) and then again in Oslo (May 27) to begin operationalizing elements of the Copenhagen Accord on REDD+, and concerns are growing over the transparency of the process outside the UNFCCC, as well as over the fate of safeguards, standards and consultations. FELLOWSHIP: Rothamsted International Fellowships

Rothamsted International (RI) is a non-profit-making charity working towards sustainable agriculture in developing and emerging countries. They aim to share research excellence in agricultural and environmental sciences for the benefit of world-wide agricultural and environmental sustainability. Visiting RI Fellows make use of the current, state-of-the art, facilites and expertise at Rothamsted Research, the oldest agricultural research station in the world.

RI offers two Fellowship schemes. Both Fellowship schemes are directed towards mid-career researchers in agricultural sciences. The Rothamsted International Fellowship Scheme (RIFS) is open to scientists from all developing countries and successful applicants spend their placements with Research groups at Rothamsted Research. The African Fellows Programme (AFP) is specifically for scientists from sub-saharan Africa and Fellowships are spent at European Research Institutes. Our Project management services aim to assist in agricultural capacity building, and we expect these and the Fellowships to lead to long-term partnerships, collaborations and capacity building with and in the Fellow's home countries.

The Deadline for the RIFS is May 7, 2010. Although the January deadline for the AFP has already passed, the website notes that pre-proposals can be submitted at any time and will be considered at the next closing date.
