Contributing Institutions: CAPRi, ICARDA, ILRI, INRAT, IRESA, OEP
Short report

Much of the degradation of rangelands in dry areas has arisen from inappropriate land use policies that ignore the impact of environmental risk. Increasingly, various types of tenure and institutional reform are accounting for risk factors and offering improved prospects for people who depend on rangeland resources.

The International Conference on Policy and Institutional Options for the Management of Rangelands in Dry Areas , held in Hammamet, Tunisia on May 6-11, sought to contribute to the development of strategies for sustainable rangeland production that might improve thelivelihood of pastoral communities. The workshop convened policy makers and researchers to explore issues concerning property rights, collective action, and the management of rangelands in dry areas in African and West Asian countries. The program included presentations of sponsored research output (which involved policy makers as discussants), a field trip, and working groups.

The executive summary of the conference was released as CAPRi Working Paper No. 23. The single papers are still in draft format.
